Optimal Psychiatry has partnered with Alpha Stim to offer treatment in Maryland. Alpha-Stim can be used as an effective low-risk treatment for anxiety and insomnia. The treatment has been shown to decrease the intensity of symptoms related to anxiety in a single treatment. The positive effects are even greater with continued use.
Overall, the device works by transmitting an electrical waveform to modulate the cells in someone’s body and brain. This has a calming effect, thus greatly reducing symptoms of anxiety and helping to improve sleep. In other countries it is also approved to help aid with depression
Alpha-Stim is a small electronic device that works using cranial electrotherapy. The device delivers small microcurrents through ear clips that attach to the earlobes. The microcurrent is painless and stimulates specific nerve cells in the brain. This helps the brain to regulate and produce more chemicals like serotonin, the body’s feel-good chemical.
While stimulating parts of the brain that produce serotonin, the Alpha-Stim also calms areas of the brain that process fear. This helps to soothe mental health disorders like depression and anxiety.
Relief is often immediate and treatments are cumulative, meaning that, over time, the device(s) train your brain to do on its own what the treatment provides.

Once you check in at the front desk, we will get you set up in one of our rooms with our massage recliner. We will then teach you how to apply the alpha stim to your earlobes and adjust the settings. Once you are comfortable, there is an oil diffuser at your table that you can adjust different scents to promote a sense of calmness. We also have relaxing music or a bluetooth speaker that you can connect to play music..

All ages and types of clients can use it, except for pregnant women and those with implanted devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, etc). Unfortunately, Insurance does not cover alpha stim at this time.
Currently, a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional is required to purchase an Alpha Stim Device. We recommend trying it first for use during a visit with one of our providers or during a paid session in our relaxation room.
